Why It Matters
The new UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute relies on Mississippians who share
the vision of a healthier future and collaboration with cancer patients, families and care teams.
Hear why they are so committed to this project.
We Are Pursuing NCI Designation
Designation by the National Cancer Institute is the highest national award a cancer center can achieve. NCI designation recognizes centers that meet exceptionally high standards of cancer care, education and research.
Achieving NCI designation will increase access to clinical trials and financial support, providing more treatment options for Mississippians here at home.

Only UMMC has the research and education infrastructure to meet the rigorous standards for NCI designation.
We are the state's academic medical center. Since 1955, we have served the people of our state through our missions of education, research and patient care.
We have an established cancer program. For decades, the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute has cared for patients statewide, including underserved communities.
We can meet the research requirement. UMMC is the only health care institution in the state with an active research mission, a requirement for NCI designation.
Join us. Together, we can create lasting change in our state on behalf of all Mississippians.
Economic Impact
A new state-of-the-art cancer facility and achieving NCI designation does more than advance patient care, it strengthens our local and state economy. By attracting top medical talent, creating jobs and fostering innovation in research and technology, this center will generate significant economic activity across our community.
